435th Meeting at the Alliance Franšaise, Chiang Mai: “The Catholic Mission in Chiang Mai”

Tuesday, 14 August 2018.

A Talk by Fr. Giovanni Rengo

The Talk:

Roman Catholicism in Chiang Mai dates back to the mid-19th century. At the
beginning of the 20th century missionary activities expanded. In 1931 the Brothers of St. Gabriel came to Chiang Mai and established and developed Montfort College near the site of the Cathedral on the Ping River. It has produced, along with other Catholic schools in Chiang Mai, many alumni who are well known on the local, regional and national level. Other Catholic congregations and services have concentrated on humanitarian and social programs. The talk will present the history and current role of the Catholic mission in the Chiang Mai area.

The Speaker:

Fr. Giovanni Rengo is a Catholic priest from Italy doing pastoral work in Chiang
Mai. He studied at the Pontifical University Gregoriana and the Pontifical Institute Biblicum in Rome. His main interests are in theology, philosophy and ecumenical dialogue. Fr. Giovanni served in mission work in Brazil, was ordained in 2008, and did pastoral work in Rome until he came to Chiang Mai in charge of Missio ad Gentes of the Neocatechumenal Way.
