The Talk:
Tony
Waters will be speaking about his book Bureaucratizing the Good
Samaritan which is about the nature of international relief
operations. His experience with relief operations began here in
Thailand where he worked for NGOs in the early 1980s, and later
continued in Tanzania. His talk will use examples from his work
in Thailand and Tanzania to illustrate principles of how the
international refugee relief regimegrew and developed after World War II.
The Speaker:
Tony
Waters is on the faculty of the Peace Studies Department at Payap
University. Previously he has taught in California, Germany and
Tanzania. His books include Weber’s Rationalism and Modern
Society (2015), and When Killing is a Crime (2007), and others.
He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Phrae province in 1980-1982, and
worked in refugee camps in Thailand in 1982-1983, and in Tanzania in
1984-1987 and 1994-1996.
